A man in the face of “the other world

The topic of this master’s thesis is the world of the Gulag which is seen through the eyes of a literary character. To present various aspects of the reality in which the character lives I divided this paper into three chapters. The first chapter is concerned with the space which is the most objective matter and, at the same time, the easiest one to understand. In this chapter I described the prisoner’s journey, the boundaries they crossed, and the labour camp itself whose elements and characteristics are specified.In the second chapter I focused on the time spent by the Gulag prisoner. I showed the double nature of the time which is objective and subjective simultaneously. The subjective time is the one experienced by the prisoner in a zone. The objective time, on the other hand, is the one determined by the political purges which took place outside the labour camp. In this part I also depicted how the time can influence the character and the literary composition.In the last chapter I immersed myself in the area of camp’s life in the context of the human relationships. Contrary to majority of studies I tried to point the bright side of human nature, supporting Gustaw Grudziński’s thesis which says that people save their dignity and can avoid becoming beasts despite the camp’s horror and atrocity. While describing the human relationships I divided them into two categories: relationships between Poles themselves and the relationships between Poles and Russians. Chcąc możliwie dokładnie, ukazać świat w którym porusza się postać, podzieliłem pracę na trzy rozdziały ,w których poruszyłem inny aspekt rzeczywistości. Pierwszy rozdział dotyczy przestrzeni, czyli materii najbardziej obiektywnej i najłatwiejszej w zrozumieniu. Tu opisałem drogę jaką przebywa więzień, granice jakie przekracza oraz sam obóz, wyszczególniając i charakteryzując w nim wszystkie jego elementy. W drugim rozdziale skupiłem się na czasie przeżywanym przez łagiernika. Ukazałem podwójną naturę czasu, który ma zarówno postać subiektywną jak i obiektywną. Czas subiektywny, to ten przeżywany przez penitencjariusza w zonie, natomiast czas obiektywny jest wyznaczany przez czystki polityczne rozgrywające się poza obozem. Również w tym rozdziale pokazałem, jak czas wpływa na myślenie bohatera oraz dzieło literackie. W ostatnim rozdziale spojrzałem na życie obozu w kontekście stosunków międzyludzkich. W przeciwieństwie do większości opracowań, starałem się pokazać jasną stronę ludzkiej natury, podtrzymując stawianą przez Gustawa Grudzińskiego tezę, że mimo okropności obozu człowiek może zachować swoją godność i uniknąć zezwierzęcenia. Opisując stosunki międzyludzkie podzieliłem je na dwie kategorie: relacje między Polakami oraz między Polakami a Rosjanami. Ta kategoryzacja pozwoliła mi uwypuklić podobieństwa i różnice zachodzące w tych relacjach
